Many BJP ministers lost the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Here's the list:
1. Smriti Irani
One of the most unexpected defeats was that of Smriti Irani in Amethi who had just in the previous election unseated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in his home bastion in a high-profile contest.
The Union Cabinet Minister lost to Congress's Kishori Lal Sharma by a margin of 1,67,196 votes.
2. Ajay Mishra Teni
The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs who was caught in the controversial Lakhimpur Kheri incident also faced defeat at the hands of Samajwadi party candidate Utkarsh Verma by over 34,329 votes.
3. Arjun Munda
In another instance of high-profile defeat, Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda faced a devastating defeat in Jharkhand's Khunti constituency, where he lost to Congress' candidate Kalicharan Munda by 1,49,675 votes.
In Kerela's Thiruvananthapuram, the Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology who appeared to have an initial lead over veteran Congress leader Shashi Tharoor was defeated by a slender margin of over 16,077 votes.
5. Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti
The Union Minister of State for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution also faced defeat in Uttar Pradesh's Fatehpur.
6. Sanjeev Balyan
Union Minister Sanjeev Balyan also saw defeat against Samajwadi Party's Harendra Singh Malik in the Muzaffarnagar Lok Sabha seat.
Several other union ministers such as Kailash Choudhary, Mahendra Nath Pandey, Kaushal Kishore, Rao Saheb Danve, RK Singh, V Muraleedharan, L Murugan, Subhash Sarkar and Nishith Pramanik also were humbled in the elections.
Now as the counting for the general elections is over, the final tally shows NDA clinching 292 seats, with BJP winning 240 seats. The INDI Alliance has 233 seats, with Congress securing 99 seats alone.
