Congress candidate from North East Delhi for the Lok Sabha elections, Kanhaiya Kumar was assaulted by seven to eight people in the New Usmanpur area on Friday (17 May).

A written complaint in this regard was given to the Delhi police by AAP's Brahmapuri councillor Chhaya Gaurav Sharma where she alleged that the attackers also threw ink on Kumar.

Video of attackers claiming credit for thrashing Kumar went viral on social media where they can be heard saying, "That Kanhaiya Kumar who raised slogans of 'Bharat tere tukde honge and Afzal tere qatil zinda hain, hum sharminda hain, we have slapped him."

The attacker started the video by saying 'Jai Shri Ram. Jai Mata Di' and claimed that they threw ink on Kumar and slapped him to tell Kumar that nobody can break India until citizens like them are alive.

"Who calls Indian Army soldiers rapists, we have treated him well. We have revenged on behalf of Indian Army. Bharat Mata ki jai. Jai Shri Ram. Jai Gaumata (hail cow goddess)," they added.

This was in reference to a controversy that erupted in JNU in 2016 when Kumar was the president of the university's student body and in a pro-Afzal Guru event, these slogans were allegedly raised.

The complaint adds that the attackers dragged Sharma to a corner using her stole and threatened to kill her and her husband. Three to four women were also injured in the attack, the complaint alleged.
