The Jama Masjid in New Delhi’s Chandni Chowk area has taken off a sign board put up a week ago at the entry gate prohibiting entry of single women, that is, women unaccompanied by men.
As per reports, the move comes after Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena spoke to Jama Masjid’s Shahi Imam Ahmed Bukhari.
The mosque, which is one of the largest in the country, put up the signboard a little more than a week ago.
Jama Masjid public relations officer Sabiullah Khanv told the media that single women “do wrong things” at the premises, treating it like a meeting point.
After removing the board, Bukhari told the media that though the sign had been removed, a chowkidar would monitor all “undesirable” activities that women would be seen indulging in, and their parents would be informed.
