Delhi's Peak Power Demand Surges To All-Time High Of 8,647 Megawatt Amid Severe Heatwave — All About It

Amid intense heat wave in northern India, the peak power demand in Delhi on Tuesday (18 June) reached an all-time high of over 8,600 megawatt (MW).
At 3.22 pm on Tuesday, Delhi's peak power demand clocked 8,647 MW, the highest ever in the history of the national capital, news agency ANI reported citing discom officials.
Delhi’s peak power demand clocked 8,000 MW for the first time on 22 May 2024.
Since then, Delhi’s peak power demand has crossed 8,000 MW on eight occasions.
On their part, BSES Rajdhani Power Limited (BRPL) and BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL) successfully met the peak power demand in their respective areas, the report cited officials as saying.
Temperatures are soaring above 40 degrees across north India, including in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Bihar and Jharkhand.
In Bihar, 22 people have died due to severe heat and humidity in the last 24 hours.
In the national capital, the maximum temperature is likely to settle at around 45 degree celsius, over six degrees higher than the normal temperature for June.
According to the weather office, the heat index, or the feels-like temperature in Delhi surged to 50 degrees celsius on Monday (17 June), NDTV reported.
