The Election Commission on Friday (16 August) announced the schedule for assembly elections in two states.
In a press conference, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced the dates for the elections in Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir.
Elections in J&K will be held in three phases on 18 September, 25 September and 1 October, respectively.
The voting in Haryana will be held on 1 October.
Counting for both J&K and Haryana elections will be done on 4 October.
The legislative assemblies of Haryana has 90 assembly constituencies.
The term of the Haryana Assembly is ending in November and a Supreme Court judgment has stated that elections in Jammu and Kashmir has to be held by 30 September 2024.
J&K has been without an elected House for over five years now.
The Union Territory has been functioning without an elected government since 2018.
Assembly elections were last held in J&K in 2014.
In 2019, the Modi government bifurcated the erstwhile state into two Union Territories -- Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh.
