The Indian Navy has rescued nine crew members - eight Indians and one Sri Lankan - of the oil tanker that capsized off the Oman Coast.

The Comoros-flagged oil tanker MV Prestige Falcớn has 16 crew members - 13 Indians and three Sri Lankans, according to the Maritime Security Centre (MSC) of Oman.

The oil tanker capsized around 25 nautical miles southeast of Ras Madrakah, Oman, on 15 July.

According to the Indian Navy, the search and rescue (SAR) efforts in coordination with Oman Authorities have been in progress since morning of 16 July.

“The SAR by Indian and Omani assets is being undertaken in challenging weather conditions as the area is experiencing rough sea and strong winds," the Indian Navy said on Wednesday (17 July).

“Indian Navy’s Long Range Maritime Reconnaissance aircraft P8I is also assisting in search for survivors," it added.

"Indian Navy's mission deployed warship INS Teg, rendering SAR assistance for the capsized Oil Tanker MV Prestige Falcon, has rescued 09 (08 Indians & 01 Sri Lankan) personnel," the Navy said.

It added that the search for the remaining survivors is continuing.

The tanker was en route to the Yemeni port of Aden, as per shipping data from LSEG.

Oman's maritime security centre told news agency Reuters that the oil tanker is "submerged and inverted," but did not confirm if the vessel had stabilised or if there was any oil leakage from it.

The vessel, a 117-metre-long oil products tanker built in 2007, is typically used for short voyages, according to LSEG's shipping data.

Duqm Port, located on Oman's southwest coast, is a key hub for the nation's major oil and gas projects.

It includes a major oil refinery within Duqm's extensive industrial zone, the largest single economic project in the kingdom.
