Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis resigned from his position in the government after taking responsibility for the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) loss in the state in the Lok Sabha elections.

The BJP could win only nine seats in Maharashtra, down from 23 it won in 2019. The Congress emerged as the largest party in the state by winning 13 of the state's 48 seats.

He accepted that unlike in 2014 and 2019, Maharashtra could not contribute much to the Narendra Modi government, which is set to be formed for the third consecutive time.

Fadnavis acknowledged that they could not effectively counter false narratives and assess anti-incumbency against MahaYuti candidates.

"I was responsible for the BJP in Maharashtra. Hence, I take responsibility for the debacle in Maharashtra. I will form new strategy and then go among public," he added.
