The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has recently announced the launch of the One World UPI wallet, designed for international travellers visiting India.

This wallet will allow users to make UPI payments without the need for an Indian SIM card or bank account, leveraging Prepaid Payment Instrument (PPI) technology, as per a report by The Indian Express.

NPCI stated, “International travellers can organise their financial needs using UPI One World. It allows for convenient loading and enables the transfer of any unused balance back to the original payment source. By enabling foreign travellers to experience the real-time payments system developed by India, we are taking a significant stride towards creating a more interconnected global digital payments ecosystem.”

Initially introduced at the 2023 G20 India Summit, the One World UPI wallet is now being officially implemented.

To use One World UPI, travellers must complete the usual know-your-customer procedure, providing details such as a passport, visa, and international phone number.

Users can load money into their One World UPI wallet using a credit or debit card, or by exchanging money at select counters with the assistance of forex experts.

Currently, One World UPI is available through NPCI partners such as IDFC First Bank and Transcorp. Interested travellers can access the service at select airports and merchant stores.
