The security forces on Sunday (20 October) thwarted an attempt by terrorists to infiltrate into Jammu and Kashmir.

A joint team of the Indian Army and the police foiled an infiltration bid in north Kashmir’s Baramulla.

In the ensuing gun battle, a terrorist was reportedly killed.

The security forces are carrying out further search operation in the area as they suspect the presence of one more terrorist in the area.

Suspicious movement was detected by the Army in the Kamalkote area of Uri, located in Baramulla, North Kashmir, on Sunday.

A search operation was launched, and as the troops closed in on the terrorists, they opened fire, triggering a gun battle.

"Alert troops spotted suspicious activity and challenged, which resulted in terrorists opening indiscriminate fire. Vigilant troops responded with effective fire. Operation is in progress," the statement added.

One terrorist was killed in the ensuing exchange of fire, Indian Express reported citing police sources.

The identity of the slain terrorist is yet to be ascertained.

While the Line of Control (LoC) along the frontier Kupwara sector has witnessed many infiltration attempts in the past few months, the Uri frontier has reportedly been silent.

Sunday's infiltration bid is one of the rare attempts by the terrorist to cross the border in this sector.
