Kolkata Doctor Rape And Murder: CBI Takes Over Investigation From West Bengal Police After High Court Order

Following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the probe into the horrific rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at Kolkata's R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
In line with standard procedures, the CBI has re-registered the First Information Report (FIR) initially filed by the Kolkata Police.
Whenever the CBI takes over a case from any state police, it starts with the registration of the police FIR as its own case.
A team comprising CBI officials from Delhi, along with forensic scientists and medical experts, is expected to arrive in Kolkata today (14 August).
The experts are likely to go through the autopsy report, scrutinising its videography, and visiting the crime scene where the doctor’s body was found.
The dead body of a second-year postgraduate doctor, who was on night duty last week, in the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, was found with marks of sexual assault.
However, the protesting doctors expressed dissatisfaction with the police investigation so far and filed a plea to transfer the case to the CBI.
Accepting their demand, a division bench of Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya transferred the case to the CBI and asked to hand over all documents to the CBI immediately.
Notably, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said yesterday that if the police fail to solve the case by Sunday, she is ready to transfer the case to the CBI.
However, unaffected by Banerjee's deadline, the court ordered an immediate transfer. It also admonished the West Bengal government over multiple lapses and discrepancies in the police investigation.
