Calcutta High Court on Tuesday (13 August) transferred the rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at Kolkata's hospital to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The dead body of a second-year postgraduate doctor, who was on night duty last week, in the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, was found with marks of sexual assault.
The West Bengal Police arrested a suspect named Sanjay Roy, who had access to various hospital departments due to his position as a civic volunteer with the police welfare board.
Accepting their demand, a division bench of Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya transferred the case to the CBI and asked to hand over all documents to the CBI immediately.
Notably, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had said yesterday that if the police fail to solve the case by Sunday, she is ready to transfer the case to the CBI.
However, unaffected by Banerjee's deadline, the court ordered an immediate transfer. It also admonished the West Bengal government over multiple lapses and discrepancies in the police investigation.
