In a tragic incident, two Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel lost their lives in an attack by Kuki militants in Manipur's Naransena area during the midnight hours on Friday (26 April).
The deceased were identified as sub-inspector N Sarkar and head constable Arup Saini, the officer added.
According to reports, the Manipur Police revealed that the CRPF personnel came under attack by Kuki militants between midnight and 2:15 am.
The deceased were serving in the CRPF 128 Battalion, stationed at the Naransena area in Bishnupur district.
Describing the attack, a senior police officer stated, "The militants fired indiscriminately from hilltops, targeting the camp. It started around 12:30 am and continued till about 2:15 am. The militants also hurled bombs, one of which exploded in the outpost of CRPF's 128 battalion."
It's important to note that over the past year, the region has witnessed over 200 casualties and thousands rendered homeless due to the violent clashes.
The explosion occurred shortly after gunfights erupted between village volunteers of the warring communities in Imphal West district.
The attack by the Kuki militants also coincided with the state's voting for the Lok Sabha elections.
However, despite the looming threat, Manipur witnessed a voter turnout of 76.06 per cent across 857 polling stations spanning 13 assembly segments in eight districts.
Notably, the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency, comprising fifteen assembly segments, went to the polls in the first phase on 19 April, alongside the Inner Manipur seat.
