Masoud Pezeshkian has emerged victorious in Iran's presidential election, defeating hardliner Saeed Jalili.

Pezeshkian, a seasoned lawmaker and cardiac surgeon, has long supported both domestic and international reforms in Iran.

His presidency promises a shift towards more pragmatic and reformist policies.

The presidential election in Iran was held in the aftermath of former President Ebrahim Raisi's tragic death in a helicopter crash on 19 May.

The polls saw the lowest voter turnout since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, with only 39.92 per cent of eligible voters participating.

Pezeshkian's victory comes as a call for change, following widespread dissatisfaction with the hardline policies of his predecessors.

Yet, the dynamics of Iranian politics, where hardliners still hold a majority and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei retains ultimate authority, will test Pezeshkian's ability to implement his vision.

This port is crucial for trade with Afghanistan and Central Asia, bypassing Pakistan. India has pledged $120 million for the development of the Shahid-Beheshti Port terminal and offered a $250 million credit line for infrastructure projects in Iran.

Iran's general foreign policy is unlikely to change drastically, regardless of the leadership.

However, the modus operandi and details might differ. Iran remains one of India's key sources of crude oil. With Iran aiming to increase oil exports amidst ongoing Western sanctions, India could benefit from a reliable and potentially cheaper source of crude oil.

Pezeshkian's approach to regional security will be closely monitored in New Delhi, especially his stance on maintaining the "Axis of Resistance" against Israel, which could impact India's delicate diplomacy in the region.

The International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), a multi-modal transportation route connecting India to Russia via Iran, presents another platform for close cooperation between India and Iran.
