PM Modi-led union government formulated a FAME India scheme in March 2015 to promote the adoption of electric and hybrid vehicles in India.

Based on the outcome and experience gained during Phase-I of the FAME India scheme and after having consultations with all stakeholders, including industry and industry associations, the government notified Phase-II of the FAME India scheme with total budgetary support of Rs 10,000 crore for five years.

This phase focuses on supporting the electrification of public transportation and aims to support around 7,000 electric buses, five lakh electric three-wheelers, 55,000 electric four-wheeler passenger cars and 10 lakh electric two-wheelers through subsidies. Also, 425 electric and hybrid buses were sanctioned to various cities with a total cost of about 280 crores. The Ministry of Heavy Industries had sanctioned about 520 charging stations and related infrastructure for Rs 43 crore under Phase-I of the FAME India Scheme.
