The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has reportedly called for a phased, state-wise implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
This comes after extensive internal discussions in the organisation regarding the UCC’s rollout as proposed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah during an election meeting in Jharkhand.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has vowed to implement UCC in Jharkhand if elected, with the party mentioning it in their election manifesto as well.
Following Shah's announcement, UCC has become a prominent issue in the current election discourse.
Senior RSS leaders have reportedly said they would recommend that the government initiate the UCC rollout using the Uttarakhand draft as a practical model for India's complex social landscape.
The RSS argues that this approach achieves a balance betweenuniformity with regional sensitivity, thus easing UCC adoption across diverse communities.
The Uttarakhand UCC draft covers various aspects such as marriage, inheritance, and provides exemptions for tribal groups.
It refrains from interfering in personal or traditional laws except the ones that are akin to injustice.
He further emphasised the importance of tailored, region-specific adaptations to ensure smooth transition and acceptance.
In backing a phased, region-specific approach, the RSS seeks to address expected resistance proactively.
“The Uttarakhand draft, in our view, provides a blueprint that respects local customs while inching toward a unified legal framework for personal matters. This phased strategy not only allows the government to refine UCC implementation based on state-level feedback but also mitigates backlash by tailoring reforms to each state’s unique social fabric," Another senior RSS functionary who has worked on the possible implementation of UCC was quoted as saying by News18.
