Statues at 1971 Shaheed Memorial Complex were vandalised
Congress MP from Kerala's Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor on Monday (12 August) morning shared an image of vandalised statues at the 1971 Shaheed Memorial Complex, Mujibnagar.
The said statue demonstrated Pakistan's surrender to India after the 1971 war when the Pakistani Commander, signed the Instrument of Surrender before India's Lieutenant General Jagjit Singh Aurora.
Blaming "anti-India vandals" for the vandalism, Tharoor expressed sadness and said, "The agenda of some of the agitators is quite clear."
Tharoor also urged Mohammed Yunus and his interim government to take urgent steps to restore law and order in the "interests of all Bangladeshis, of every faith. India stands with the people of Bangladesh at this turbulent time, but such anarchic excess can never be condoned."
Earlier, the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre located in Bangladesh's capital Dhaka was also looted and arson after violent unrest erupted following Sheikh Hasina's resignation from the post of Prime Minister.
