News Brief
Flags of India and Taiwan.
In response to recent media reports circulating misleading information about the influx of 100,000 Indian migrant workers into Taiwan, the Taiwanese Foreign Ministry has swiftly come forward to set the record straight.
The reports, laden with harmful stereotypes and insinuations about the superiority of Chinese workers, have been dismissed by Taiwan as baseless and potentially part of a broader disinformation campaign.
Earlier, these reports were fuelled by statements suggesting that Taiwan may recruit 100,000 Indian workers.
However, the Taiwanese Labour Minister, Hsu Ming-chun, clarified that this information is inaccurate. The crux of the matter lies in a cooperative memorandum of understanding (MOU) currently under discussion, with the reported 100,000 figure lacking any factual basis.
The Foreign Ministry has clarified that the terms of the agreement are still in the negotiation phase, dispelling the exaggerated claims that have been propagated by certain media outlets.
Taiwan has taken a firm stand against the unfounded attacks on the character of Indian workers, emphasising the stellar reputation that Indian labourers have earned globally.
Highlighting Taiwan's commitment to diversity, human rights, and its history of hosting labourers from various countries, the Foreign Ministry categorically opposes any form of prejudice or discrimination.
The Foreign Ministry has explicitly stated that Taiwan views India as a crucial partner under its #NewSouthboundPolicy, fostering friendly bilateral relations.
In light of the misinformation circulating, the ministry underscores the importance of enhancing labour cooperation between the two nations, describing it as a pivotal component of their diplomatic ties.
Amid concerns about orchestrated efforts to manipulate public opinion, the Taiwanese authorities suspect the involvement of third parties utilising automated fake accounts or paid commenters in online debates.
As tensions persist in the region, the Foreign Ministry urges the public not to be swayed by misleading narratives and affirms its commitment to nurturing strong ties with India.
