India's Vinesh Phogat on Tuesday (6 August) stunned world number one and defending champion Yui Susaki of Japan to enter the semi-finals of the Women's freestyle 50 kg wrestling event at Paris Olympics 2024.

Vinesh recovered from 0-2 down for the majority of the clash to beat Tokyo gold medallist Yui on technical superiority, earning herself a place in the quarterfinals.

The 25-year-old Susaki had won the gold in the category at the Tokyo 2020 Games without dropping a single point across four bouts.

As per records, Susaki has only lost five bouts in her wrestling career since 2010 and won the World Championship gold in 2017 (48kg), 2019, 2022 and 2023.

In her past Olympic appearances at Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020, Vinesh finished 10th and ninth, respectively.

After competing in the 53kg category in the previous Games, she opted to compete in the 50kg category this year.

Vinesh is set to compete against Ukraine’s Oksana Livach in the quarter-final today (6 August) evening.
