Promoting energy conservation measures with maximum use of clean energy, Indian Railways has undertaken a unique exercise of green ratings of railway establishments including stations.
The initiatives involve Green Rating Certification for different types of railway units across the country. Such certification mainly covers assessment of parameters having direct bearing on the environment such as:
energy conservation measures,
use of renewable energy,
impact of greenhouse gas emission,
water conservation,
solid and liquid waste management, and
green cover
"All railway divisions have been told to select two stations for green ratings. It is a move towards Net Zero Emission with environmental sustainability," said a senior Railway Ministry official.
Besides stations, other rail premises such as production units, workshops and buildings are also to be included in phases during the green ratings drive.
Reduction in carbon footprint, conservation of scarce natural resources, enhanced air quality, excellent daylighting are some of the areas to be focused during the rating exercise of rail premises.
Effective waste management and increased use of renewable energy like solar power are other factors to be judged in the rating system.
The implementation of green measures would ensure environmental sustainability and enhance commuter experience. The energy efficiency initiatives include:
100 per cent LED lighting at stations, occupancy sensors to optimise lighting energy consumption, rooftop solar system,
water efficiency envisages reduction in overall water consumption,
100 per cent waste water from station and coaching yard is treated and recycled for coach washing, apron cleaning and landscaping requirements.
Provisions for rain water harvesting and use of stored rainwater for gardening purposes are also being included in the drive.
