In a damage control move, the Trinamool Party (TMC) has distance herself from the party MP Mahua Moitra remarks that said Goddess Kali, to her, was “meat-eating, alcohol-accepting”.

“Kaali to me, is a meat-eating, alcohol-accepting goddess. You have the freedom to imagine your goddess. There are some places where whiskey is offered to gods and in some other places it would be blasphemy,” Moitra said today (Jul 5) during a discussion at the India Today Conclave East 2022.

"I have the freedom to imagine my Kali in that way... that is my freedom and I don't think anyone's sentiments should be hurt. I have the freedom... as much as you have to worship your god," she said at the event.

The usually voluble Moitra was responding to a question over the controversy that has erupted over depicted of goddess in a documentary poster.

In December last year, Moitra was publicly chided party chief and West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee during a intra-party meeting.

TMC recently faced criticism from Ramakrishna Mission authorities after a party legislator Nirmal Majhi declared that Mamata Banerjee was a reincarnation of Maa Sarada Devi, the wife and spiritual consort of Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa.

In Dec last year, Moitra faced the ire of party chief Mamata Banerjee during a public meeting.
