In an apparent reference to the murder of mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother, Ashraf, the al Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) has threatened retaliatory strikes against "martyrdom of Muslims killed on live television in UP".

This message was given in a seven-page magazine released by AQIS to mark the occasion of Eid.

Atiq and his brother were shot dead by three assailants on the night of 15 April.

Following the murder, leaders from outfits like the Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Congress came out with statements that were not only seen as sympathetic towards Atiq but were also accused of being attempts to whitewash his crimes.
