By-polls in five states

Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) Kedar Prasad Gupta is leading in Bihar's Kurhani. He lost the 2020 assembly elections by a mere 712 votes to the RJD candidate Anil Kumar Sahni.

However, Sahni was disqualified and Janata Dal (United) or JD(U)'s Manoj Kumar Singh contested on behalf of the Grand Alliance. He is trailing by over 3,000 votes.

It was an expected trend unless Vikassheel Insaan Party (VIP) plays a spoilsport. The current trend shows that VIP and AIMIM are just around 2 per cent of votes each.

Dimple Yadav is leading by a huge margin in Mainpuri parliamentary seat. This was an expected trend as Akhilesh Yadav managed to consolidate his vote bank by reconciling with all family members, like his uncle Shivpal Yadav.

Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) candidate Madan Bhaiya is leading in Khatauli by-polls of UP. BJP candidate Rajkumari Saini is trailing. She is the wife of the BJP MLA whose disqualification necessitated the by-polls.

The seat generally remains loyal to the state government. However, if the SP-RLD candidate wins, it will be a huge concern for the Yogi government.

SP's Asim Raja is leading in Rampur by-polls of UP. This seat is a question of prestige for both the SP and the disqualified 10-time MLA from here Azam Khan.

Congress candidate Savitri Mandavi is leading in Bharatpratappur of Chhattisgarh. This can be a good indicator for the party as the assembly elections are due next year.

BJP's Brahmhanand Netam is trailing. It appears that the Congress' campaign against him over a POCSO case worked. Netam had to take relief from Jharkhand High Court to prevent his arrest.

Biju Janta Dal (BJD) candidate Barsha Singh Bariha is leading in Padampur by-polls of Odisha. With BJP's Pradip Purohit trailing, the party's ambition for another by-poll victory seems distant.

Barsha is the daughter of BJD MLA Bijay Ranjan Singh Bariha whose death necessitated the by-polls. Hence, sympathy is with Barsha and BJP's allegations of 'vote for note' against her could not make much difference.

Unaffected by the Congress crisis in Rajasthan, the party's candidate Anil Kumar Sharma is leading in Sardarshahar of Churu district.

This was an expected trend as this seat is a Congress stronghold. The constituency has elected a BJP MLA only once in the last three decades.
