"I will entrust a responsibility to my Hindu brothers to see that minorities are not tortured on April 6 (Hanuman Jayanti)".

This was West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee speaking at a programme in Purba Medinipur district on 3 April, 2023.

In addition, she made the claim that political workers carrying weapons and bombs were deliberately taking out Ram Navami processions in 'minority areas'.

Furthermore, she stated that this was happening even five days after the festival. The purpose of these processions, according to her, was to incite violence.

Hindus will observe Hanuman Jayanti on 6 April, i.e., day after tomorrow.

  • She thinks that the Rama Navami violence in Bengal was triggered by the Hindus.

  • The Bengal administration is anticipating trouble on 6 April as well.

  • Indeed, Dr Sujan Chakraborty, a CPI(M) central committee member, suggested that instead of touring Purba Medinipur district, Banerjee could have held meetings with the administration to increase security measures if she had known about the potential violence on Hanuman Jayanti.

Senior BJP leader Rahul Sinha accused Banerjee of using an excuse to shift blame onto BJP if something goes wrong on April 6.
