Amritpal Singh Sandhu
The Punjab government informed the High Court that they are on the verge of apprehending the Khalistani preacher Amritpal Singh who has been on the run since Punjab Police launched a crackdown against him and his group 'Waris Punjab De' on 18 March.
The court of Justice N S Shekhawat was hearing the habeas corpus petition filed by advocate Imaan Singh Khara, seeking the release of Amritpal Singh from alleged police custody.
Khara filed a recent plea for habeas corpus, alleging 'illegal custody' of Amritpal by the police.
During the ongoing court hearing, the Advocate General of Punjab, Vinod Ghai, disclosed that Amritpal Singh, the Khalistani preacher in question, has not yet been arrested.
They were coordinating with agencies to nab the radical preacher, the AG told the court.
Following this, the judge requested the AG to submit an affidavit concerning the matter, according to the petitioner's statement.
The court also asked the petitioner to file an affidavit to produce evidence that Amritpal Singh was in alleged police custody.
The next court hearing in this matter has been scheduled for 29 March.
