Assam: Tata Electronics Performs Bhumi Pujan For Rs 27,000 Crore Semiconductor Chip Unit, CM Sarma Calls Its A "Historic Day" For The State

The bhumi pujan for the Rs 27,000 crore semiconductor ATMP (Assembly Testing Marking and Packaging) facility of Tata Electronics in Assam's Morigaon district was performed today (Aug 3) in the presence of state Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran.
Speaking during the bhumi pujan, the Chief Minister said that Assam will now be able to make the world’s most advanced electronic components at the semiconductor plant in Jagiroad.
The greenfield project of Tata Electronics at Jagiroad in Morigaon district will involve an investment of Rs 27,000 crore and will generate employment opportunities for more than 30,000 people.
The semiconductor ATMP plant will be established at the defunct project site of the Hindustan Paper Corporation's (HPC's) Nagaon Paper Mill.
In July, the Assam Government signed an agreement with the Tata Group to lease over 170 acres of land to the company at Jagiroad.
The first phase of the facility is expected to be operational by mid-2025.
The company will build the facility by focusing on three key platform technologies - wire bond, flip chip, and a differentiated offering called integrated systems packaging (ISP) - with plans to expand the roadmap to advanced packaging technologies.
The proposed facility will serve the growing global demands across key market segments like AI, industrial, and consumer electronics, the company said.
The project is set to industrialisation in North-East India. It is envisioned under the Centre's semiconductor policy driven by the India semiconductor mission and the Assam government's electronics policy.
The project also envisions an ecosystem for the local production of chemicals and high-purity gases such as neon, helium, carbon dioxide, ammonia, silane, hydrides, laser gases, etc. all of the semiconductor grade specifications — used at various manufacturing stages.
Tata Electronics is also setting up a Rs 91,000 crore Semiconductor fabrication facility at the Dholera Special Investment Region (DSIR).
In February, the Union Cabinet had approved proposals for three semiconductor plants of which two were in Gujarat and one in Assam, for an estimated cost of Rs 1.26 lakh crore.
