The government on Friday (5 August) informed the Parliament that over 13.92 lakh electric vehicles are plying on roads of India at present.
"A total of 13,92,265 Electric Vehicles (EVs) are being used on the roads of India as on 3 August, 2022 as per the information received from Ministry of Road Transport and Highways," Union Minister of State for Heavy Industries Krishan Pal Gurjar said in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha.
Out of the total EVs plying on the roads of the country, 5,44,643 are two-wheelers, 7,93,370 are three-wheelers and 54,252 are four-wheelers.
Sales of EVs went up from 1,34,460 (41,048 two-wheelers, 88,391 three-wheelers and 5,021 four-wheelers) in FY21 to 4,28,224 (2,31,434 two-wheelers, 1,77,884 three-wheelers and 18,906 four-wheelers) as per the information available on VAHAN-4 centralized database of RC (Registration Certificate), he added.
The increase in sale of EVs is attributed mainly to the incentive under FAME India Scheme Phase-II, provided to buyers of electric vehicles meeting FAME criteria in the form of an upfront reduction in the purchase price of electric vehicles, the minister said.
