India Surpasses China With Most Universities Featured In QS World Asia Rankings; 5 IITs, IISc, DU Among Top 100

In the latest 2024 QS World University Rankings: Asia released by QS Quacquarelli Symonds, global higher education analysts, India now has the highest number of represented universities, with 148 featured, an increase of 37 from last year.

Mainland China follows with 133 universities, and Japan with 96.

Additionally, Myanmar, Cambodia and Nepal are featured for the first time in the rankings.

The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) has been named the best institute in India.

In the Asia rankings, IIT Bombay holds the 40th position.

It is worth mentioning that the top three national rankings have remained unchanged from the previous edition of the rankings.

IISc Bangalore, Delhi University, and five Indian Institutes of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Madras, Kharagpur, Kanpur) have once again achieved positions within the top 100 institutes in Asia, just as they did last year.

The QS World University Rankings for Asia are a prestigious ranking system that evaluates universities in the Asian region.

In the 100-200 ranking range, IIT Guwahati has improved by 13 positions this year, securing the 111th spot.

On the other hand, IIT-Roorkee has experienced a slight drop of two ranks, now standing at 116.

Nevertheless, JNU and BHU have both made progress, with JNU securing the 117th position and BHU securing the 199th position.


Chandigarh University has risen from 185th position to 149th, Bharathiar University in Coimbatore has moved up from 205th to 171st, and Amity University has climbed from 200th to 186th position.

Additionally, VIT has made a notable gain of 10 positions, now ranking at 163rd.

The University of Calcutta has maintained its position in the top 200, despite a decline of six positions to 187.

The Indian Statistical Institute and Madurai Kamaraj University have recently entered the top 300 ranking.

The Indian Statistical Institute is ranked 220, while Madurai Kamaraj University is ranked between 261 and 270.

Peking University has once again been named the top university in Asia, with the University of Hong Kong coming in second.

The University of Hong Kong has improved its ranking this year, moving up from fourth place last year.

Korea University has made significant progress in its ranking, moving up six positions to rank 9 among the top 10 universities.

However, KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology), another university from Korea, has experienced a significant decline, dropping from eighth position to 13th this year.

The top universities in Singapore have also seen some changes, with the National University of Singapore (NUS) falling from second to third place, while Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU) has risen from fifth to fourth place.

The latest edition of the ranking includes 856 institutions from 25 countries and territories, making it the largest one to date. Among these institutions, 148 are being ranked for the first time.
