Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn), the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer and Apple supplier, unveiled three new electric vehicle models during the Hon Hai Tech Day 2021 (HHTD21) at the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall on Monday (Oct 18).
Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn) Chairman Liu Young-wayin showcased prototypes of electric vehicles developed by Foxtron Vehicles Technologies -- a joint venture between Hon Hai Group and Yulon Motor - Model C (a sport utility vehicle,), Model E (a luxury sedan) and Model T (a bus).
Foxconn has set an ambition goal of capturing at least 5 percent share of the global electric vehicle market by 2025 and aiming to generate US$30 billion in EV sales. It will face tough competition from established players like Tesla, Volkswagen and General Motors.
“We anticipate significant revenue contribution by 2023, and for EVs to be Hon Hai’s next trillion NT business in five years,” Liu Young-wayin said during the event.
Model C - Sports Utility Vehicle
The 4.64m-long Model C, a sport utility vehicle, features a sleek, spacious and power-saving design. It will be priced around US$35,700.
Model C is the first model built on Hon Hai’s electric vehicle open platform and is positioned as the intrinsically optimized electric SUV with pure electric nature
Model C, with a low 0.27 drag coefficient, accelerates from 0 to 100 km in 3.8 seconds and delivers an extended range of 700km.
It will offers comfortable seating for 5+2 people and plenty of storage space, making it easy to navigate crowded metro areas while still enjoying the luxury of a larger car.
Model E- Luxury Flagship Sedan
Model E luxury sedan, jointly developed with Italian design firm Pininfarina SpA, can accelerate from 0 to 100kph in 2.8 seconds, and generates 750 horsepower, Foxconn said
The Model E will offer a 750km range to address the range anxiety of most electric car users, the company added. It will be targeted at middle to high-end consumers with smart features like facial recognition to unlock the car, electric drive impulsion, and advanced skyactiv-vehicle dynamics. The rear seat space can also transform into a dedicated mobile office, with personal mobile devices seamlessly connected to the passenger car.
Model T bus
Model T bus is equipped with a rigid body and a 400 watt-hours battery, fully meeting the standards set by the US Federal Transit Administration, the company said.
The company claimed that Model T has completed 200,000km of acceleration endurance test and more than 1,000 hours of rigid strength tests at the Automotive Research & Testing Center (ARTC) Testing.
Foxconn also said that Model T’s battery can withstand temperatures of up to 400 degrees, across a range of more than 400 kilometers. Under full load conditions, the maximum climbing capacity can reach 25%, and the maximum speed can reach 120 kilometers per hour, providing drivers with a relaxed and smooth driving experience, whilst allowing passengers a comfortable and safe journey.
Yulon Motor chairperson Lilian Chen said that the three EVs were built in just one year and was demonstration of Taiwan’s potential and strengths in automobile research and development.
Terry Gou, Founder of Hon Hai, who made a surprise appearance by driving out in a Model E electric car, said that unveiling of EVs were the best birthday present for him, which is why he insisted on driving it himself.
Gou has been a strong proponent that adoption of electric vehicles would is inevitable trend underscored by the simple fact that it has become the world's largest and most expensive smart electronic device. Gou said that with the strong capabilities in electronic manufacturing, including semiconductors, modules, precision machinery and operation, Taiwan can play a key role in the development of electric vehicles.
Vice Premier Shen Jong-chin announced that the Model T bus is likely to start service in Kaohsiung next year, once it passes the quality and safety test of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, paving the way for it to break into overseas markets.
