Indic Academy is organising a chat with Aneesh Gokhale, author of the book Brahmaputra, as part of its IndicChat series on Sunday (21 May), live on Facebook.
Aneesh Gokhale: “Brahmaputra is the heroic tale of the Assamese and their leader Lachit Barphukan, who inspired his men to face the Mughal empire. A story of the basic human desire for freedom and the people’s struggle to achieve it. A tale of their valour and sacrifice.”
Brahmaputra is Aneesh Gokhale’s second book. His first, Sahyadris to Hindukush, a historical novel on the rise of the Maratha empire, was published at age 24 in 2012. Brahmaputra was launched three years later in 2015.
In his article for DNA, Aneesh Gokhale rued the fact that India had largely forgotten the brave leader Lachit Barphukan. “It is rather unfortunate then that this brave son of India is largely unknown outside of Assam,” he wrote. This book hopes to rekindle the memory of this “Assamese contemporary of Chhatrapati Shivaji”.
Amlan Jyoti Hazarika reviewed the book for DNA, in which he said, “Gokhale must be applauded for his effort to bring to 'mainland' India the little-known story of a man who stood up successfully to a mighty power.” (Full review)
