Mitsubishi Electric India, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Japan, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Tamil Nadu government to establish a production unit for Room Air Conditioners (RAC) and compressors near Gummidipoondi in the Tiruvallur district.
In future, the company also plans to manufacture Precision Air Conditioning (PAC) and Variable Refrigerant Flow (VRF) (for commercial use) at the site.
This would be Mitsubishi's first AC production facility in India and it would be built with an investment of Rs 1,891 crore.
The manufacturing unit is expected to create employment opportunities for approximately 2,000 people, in which the company has proposed to employ about 60 per cent women. Mitsubishi's latest venture is expected to stimulate the growth of ancillary units in the area.
The facility would include a Research and Development (R&D) centre for product innovation and testing.
The project will start operating in October 2025.
The initial annual capacity would be 300,000 outdoor units of room air conditioners and 650,000 compressors.
