Uttar Pradesh Director-General of Police (DGP) Mukul Goel was removed from his post yesterday (11 May). He had served as DGP for only 11 months.
Series of Reshuffles and Transfers: The UP government led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has reshuffled the bureaucracy several times over the past few months.
Before the state elections in July 2021, 18 IAS officers were transferred in a midnight reshuffle. The exercise included the transfer of K Vijayendra Pandian, the DM of Gorakhpur, the former Lok Sabha constituency of CM Adityanath.
In October 2019, 13 IAS officers were transferred.
In April 2022, post-elections in the state, 14 IPS officers were transferred. These included police chiefs of nine districts. Among the 14, some were given fresh postings while others were put on the waiting list.
What Does it Indicate: The UP government led by CM Adityanath is known for bold actions.
The major overhaul in the police and administrative blocks could be the result of feedback received from the ground as well as party members.
By removing the DGP, the state government is sending out a strong message.
CM Yogi, who is always in an action mode, has set high expectations from the state bureaucracy. Those not performing as per expectations would not be tolerated.
