Temple activist T R Ramesh today (30 April) in a post on X (formerly Twitter) wrote that the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HRCE) department has stated before the Madras High Court that it would not go ahead with the construction of a shopping complex in front of the Rajagopuram of the Arunachaleswarar temple in Tiruvannamalai.

He stated that it was a victory for temple devotees.

When the issue was brought before the Court in November last year, the Division Bench which heard the case, had ordered that the construction activity should be stopped immediately.

Some of the reasons mentioned by Ramesh while speaking with Swarajya, about why he considered the construction to be wrong were that it is not one of the purposes mentioned in Section 66 of the HRCE Act for the usage of surplus funds of the temple and that it was against the heritage values and aesthetic values of the temple.
