On the occasion of the victory of the Indian Armed Forces over the Pakistanis in the Kargil district of Ladakh, India celebrates 'Kargil Vijay Diwas' or 'Kargil Victory Day' every year on 26 July.
On this day, the entire nation of India commemorates the valiant sacrifices of the Indian soldiers, who, for protecting the pride, dignity, and honor of the country, assaulted Pakistani positions on the commanding heights of the Kargil district and successfully recaptured them.
Earlier, prior to the Kargil war, both the Indian and Pakistan Armies used to withdraw from the higher posts in the Kargil, Drass, and Batalik sectors during winters due to extreme weather conditions and heavy snowfall.
There was a general understanding between both armies, but in 1998, Pakistan Army Chief General Pervez Musharraf decided, ostensibly to teach India a lesson for capturing Siachen Glacier, to capture Indian Army's vacated posts in the winters.
When the intrusions were detected with the help of a Ladakhi shepherd named Tashi Namgyal, who informed the army commanders of the area, Operation Vijay was launched. After three months of intense fighting, the Indian Army recaptured all the occupied posts from the Pakistan Army.
