The Indian government is reportedly delaying the quality certification process for factories in China, affecting companies such as Nike, Mitsubishi, and Carrier, according to a report by The Economic Times.
These firms are struggling to obtain Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for their vendor factories in China, prompting them to seek certification for manufacturing units in other Asian nations.
However, the government is cautious about certifying factories, even in ASEAN countries like Thailand and Vietnam, fearing it could lead to the indirect import of Chinese products.
This move aligns with the government's aim to encourage domestic production and reduce dependence on Chinese imports.
Over 500 products, including footwear, toys, and air conditioners, fall under quality control orders (QCOs), requiring BIS certification for manufacturing, whether located in India or abroad.
The government's focus on strengthening quality standards is part of a broader strategy to position India as a quality-conscious nation and foster development by 2047.
