All Chennai MRTS Stations Set For Makeover: Detailed Revamp Report In Works

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to undertake a detailed study to enhance facilities and improve commuter experience at all Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) stations in the city.

As the takeover of MRTS by Chennai Metro Rail appears imminent, the Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) has simultaneously been focusing on upgrading station amenities and promoting commercial development. Plans are being drawn up to address these enhancements.

"We have asked Chennai Metro Rail to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) that will exhaustively identify the shortfalls in facilities required for commuters at each MRTS station and suggest ways to improve them," said a CUMTA official.

"For instance, the report will specify where additional escalators and lifts are needed and how to better maintain them," he added.

According to officials from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), bids for the DPR will be floated once the model code of conduct ends. A consultant will be selected to conduct the study, which is expected to be completed within 4-5 months.

The report will also address neighbourhood area development around each station. "The areas surrounding each station and their access need improvement. Commuters should have unobstructed footpaths to conveniently walk to the station. The report will focus on this aspect as well," the official added, reports The Hindu.

CUMTA has also prepared a blueprint for optimal utilisation of station space and promoting commercial development. The authority is awaiting in-principle approval from the Railway Board for the MRTS takeover, which is expected within the next two months.

"We have completed the concept paper for the commercial development of 18 stations. Although the takeover process will be fully completed in a couple of years, we want commuters to gradually see improvements at stations. Therefore, we are doing the preparatory work and keeping things ready before the in-principle approval and the signing of the MoU," the official concluded.

Over the next years, the primary focus will be on enhancing the stations to improve the passenger experience. Ultimately, the goal is to ensure the seamless integration of both MRTS and the Chennai Metro Rail system, enhancing the mobility and convenience of commuters.
