Indian Railways is re-developing the Gaya Railway Station in Bihar at an estimated cost of Rs 244 crore.
The Ministry of Railways announced that the casting of the north side multi-level bike parking ramp, as well as the IT/Exchange, railway mail service (RMS) building, and arrival west building brickwork, are currently in progress.
The IT/Exchange and RMS building terrace floor slab casting has already been completed.
Gaya Railway Station, located in the Mughalsarai railway division, falls under the East Central Railway zone. It is interesting to note that the Grand Chord rail line, which connects Howrah and New Delhi, passes through Gaya. This railway network ensures that Gaya is well-connected to most states.
Apart from the rail line linking Howrah and New Delhi, Gaya also has two other broad-gauge train lines. One connects to Kiul railway station, while the other connects to Patna.
The city is served by two major railway stations, namely Manpur junction and Gaya junction. With daily passenger and express train services, Gaya enjoys good connectivity with Biharsharif, Rajgir, Islampur, Patna, Jehanabad, and Nawada.
Gaya is the second largest city in the state of Bihar. It is located about 100 km from the state capital Patna. This ancient city grew on the banks of the Phalgu River (Niranjana, as mentioned in Ramayana).
This place is considered holy among the Hindus, the Buddhists and the Jains. It is surrounded by small rocky hills (Mangla-Gauri, Shringa-Sthan, Ram-Shila and Brahmayoni) on three sides and the river flows on the fourth (eastern) side. Gaya derives its name from the mythological demon Gayasur (which literally means Gaya the demon).
Currently, Gaya Railway Station boasts of nine platforms and 14 tracks. It is the second most important railway station in Bihar, after Patna and the second largest in terms of platforms.
It had been announced in the 2009–2010 Railway Budget that Gaya Railway Station would be developed as a world-class railway station in public-private-partnership mode, along with 49 other stations throughout the nation.
The re-development of Gaya Railway Station will boost tourism in the region.
