Kochi Metro's 28-Km First Phase Wraps Up, Commercial Operations On Final Stretch Imminent

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) is gearing up to extend metro services in the 1.20-km S N Junction-Thripunithura extension. This development comes in the wake of Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), Anant M Chowdhary, completing his two-day inspection of the corridor on 13 February.

The CMRS inspected passenger amenities, signalling, other systems, and the track before taking a call on issuing a safety certificate for trains to begin commercial operation on the corridor.

The commissioning of the S N Junction-Thripunithura stretch will signify the completion of the 28-km Kochi Metro corridor, featuring a total of 25 stations between Aluva and Thripunithura.

The Kochi Metro metro’s 25.2-km Aluva-Pettah Phase I, with 22 stations was built by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) at a cost of Rs 6,218.14 crore.

Following the completion of the first phase, Kochi Metro Rail Limited has embarked on two extensions of the metro project.

The first extension, spanning 1.8 km from Pettah to S N Junction, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1 September 2022. Implemented as a state sector project, it marked a significant milestone in the expansion of the metro network.

Additionally, the Kochi Metro Phase 1B project, covering 1.20 km from S N Junction to Thripunithura Terminal, has also been constructed under the state sector umbrella and is poised for commissioning.

Notably, the Thripunithura terminal station has been equipped with three platforms and tracks, in anticipation of metro’s future extensions, including plans to link it with the phase-II Kakkanad (Infopark) extension.
