Maharashtra: Latur Rail Coach Factory In Marathwada To Produce 100 Vande Bharat Trains

In the coming years, Indian Railways will deploy 400 Vande Bharat trains in the country, 100 of them will be produced at the upcoming Rail Coach Factory in Latur, in Marathwada, according to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.

Vaishnaw made the announcement on Monday (3 October) while speaking at the foundation-stone laying ceremony of a rail pit line.

For the past few years, the Marathwada coach factory has been being built by the Government of India-owned Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), which in December 2020 successfully manufactured the first coach shell, the minister said, reported the Economic Times.

The Marathwada Coach Factory Project, as per RVNL, will cost Rs 497.5 crore and have a yearly production capacity of 250 Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) coaches.

"Marathwada will produce the next generation of Vande Bharat trains. The facility in Latur will produce nearly 1,600 coaches. Each coach will cost between Rs 8 and Rs 9 crore.

The project will provide opportunities for businesses within a 400-500-kilometre radius," the minister added.

There are currently three Vande Bharat trains running in the country, with the most recent one between Mumbai Central and Gandhinagar having just begun service last week.

The other two Vande Bharat trains are running between New Delhi-Varanasi and New Delhi-Katra stations.
