On 25 January, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will dedicate to the nation — the 173 km New Khurja Junction – New Dadri Junction – New Rewari Junction double line electrified section, an important link establishing crucial connectivity between the Western and Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs).
Constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 10,141 crore, the 173 km double line electrified section from Khurja to Rewari has six DFC stations along the route, including New Boraki, New Dadri, New Faridabad, New Prithla, New Tauru, and New Dharuhera.
According to DFCC, at the heart of this section, there stand remarkable feats of engineering of a one-kilometre-long double-line rail tunnel with high rise OHE electrification being the first of its kind in the world. This tunnel is designed to seamlessly operate double-stack container trains.
The section also has 2.76 km viaduct at Sohna which has been constructed with a height of 25 metres from ground level. This avoids heavy earthwork otherwise the DFC track would have divided the Sohna city in two parts.
The section contains three river bridges, three rail flyovers, 24 major bridges, 79 minor bridges, 16 road overbridges (ROBs), 32 major road underbridges (RUBs), 17 minor RUBs, and 8-foot overbridges (FOBs).
The section links DFC with Indian Railways at Dadri through 4.54 km long Rail Flyover (RFO), a crucial requirement for the seamless transportation of goods.
A senior DFCC official said, "This vital corridor traverses diverse terrains, passing through key states such as Uttar Pradesh, touching Bulandshahar and Gautam Budh Nagar, Haryana with its presence in Faridabad, Palwal, Gurugram, Mewat, and Rewari, and extending into Rajasthan, reaching Alwar."
Operational Efficiency and Environmental Impact
The New Khurja – New Boraki – New Dadri – New Rewari double line electrified section connects the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridor and has a long impact in streamlining freight train operation in the Delhi NCR region, decongesting the Rewari – Delhi – Ghaziabad – Dadri section and considerable reduction in transit time.
Freight trains on this section bring about a paradigm shift by running double-stake long haul trains from western ports to Delhi NCR region giving a boost to EXIM traffic.
The strategic routing of goods trains on the DFC track resulted in a remarkable reduction in running time between Khurja and Rewari up to 20 hours, effectively bypassing the congested NCR area encompassing Ghaziabad and Delhi.
The section of DFCCIL not only streamlines logistics but also significantly mitigates pollution in the NCR region by reducing the number of truck movements.
Economic Impetus and Industrial Development
The operationalisation of this crucial section marks a significant milestone in establishing a reliable and efficient transportation network for container and EXIM traffic, including cement, stone, milk/dairy, white goods and parcel traffic.
It additionally enables the seamless movement of coal and steel from the eastern region, as well as the movement of foodgrains and fertilisers to the eastern part of the country. Reduction in transit time and faster speed of goods train will reduce logistics cost in India.
The integration of Eastern-India with western ports through the Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) acts as a major catalyst for the "Make in India" policy.
This integration provides a streamlined platform for smoother trade and commerce. The corridor's trajectory through pivotal cities such as Gautam Buddha Nagar, Faridabad, Palwal, Gurugram, and Tauru unlocks substantial industrial development opportunities. This catalyses economic growth, transforming these cities into hubs of commerce, trade, and manufacturing.
Benefits and Innovations
Freight trains achieving speeds of up to 100 km h will substantially enhance the punctuality of Indian Railways' passenger trains.
There will be a significant reduction in transit time up to 20 hours from Rewari to Dadri, Tuglakabad.
A decrease in pollution levels in the NCR region is anticipated.
Reliable and expedited movement of container and EXIM traffic is a major support for the "Make in India" policy.
Key cities along the route will have new opportunities for Industrial development.
Innovations such as heavy and long-haul train operations, double-line electric tracks, and advanced track construction technology.
The New Khurja to New Rewari double line electrified section is not just a railway link; it is a catalyst for operational efficiency, environmental sustainability, and economic development.
