Tamil Nadu has emerged as a leading producer of Electric Vehicles (EV) in India, according to data from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways' Vahan Dashboard.
This year alone, over four lakh EVs out of the ten lakh sold in the country were manufactured in Tamil Nadu.
These EVs include two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and cars produced by ten different companies based in the state.
The Vahan Dashboard data reveals that a total of 10,44,600 EVs were registered with RTOs between January and 20 September in India.
Tamil Nadu has sold a total of 4,14,802 electric vehicles (EVs) based on the registration data from all the regional transport offices (RTOs) in the state, reports Hindustan Times.
An official described this achievement as a significant record that reflects the diverse and vibrant presence of multiple sectors in Tamil Nadu, as well as the government's commitment to fostering growth.
‘Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicles Policy 2023’
Tamil Nadu aims to become the world's EV capital and is already recognised as one of the top 10 global automobile hubs. The government has been actively working on developing the EV ecosystem, including the manufacturing of batteries and charging infrastructure.
The ‘Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicles Policy 2023’ was released by Chief Minister M K Stalin on 14 February.
The new strategy aims to promote EV adoption, strengthen the state's ecosystem development, and create EV cities in Tamil Nadu. It also aims to make TN a popular location for EV manufacturing in South-East Asia.
Cities like Tiruchirappalli, Coimbatore, Chennai, Madurai, Salem, and Tirunelveli would serve as pilot cities for implementing e-mobility solutions in the state.
New and expansion projects can take advantage of various incentives under the policy, such as reimbursement of SGST, turnover-based subsidy, capital, and advanced chemistry cell subsidies.
The state anticipates that over Rs 50,000 crore will be invested in electric vehicle manufacturing by 2025.
Tamil Nadu's goal is to manufacture 30 per cent of all-electric vehicles sold in India and make a significant contribution to global exports by 2030.
The new EV strategy offers to revise demand and energy pricing for public charging stations, subject to regulatory clearance.
The proposed adjustments include a 75 per cent decrease in existing costs for the first two years and a 50 per cent reduction in energy prices for the subsequent two years.
The presence of major manufacturers like Hyundai, Nissan, TVS, Mahindra, and Daimler is indicative of Tamil Nadu's expansion as a hub of the automotive industry, according to the government release.
The state's robust manufacturing environment has encouraged new entrants such as Ather Electric, Ola Electric, Ampere, and others to establish electric vehicle production facilities.
