The Tuticorin Airport in Tamil Nadu is currently undergoing significant upgrades to improve services and accommodate the growing passenger traffic with Rs 381 crore.
It is operated by the Airport Authority of India (AAI).
Upgrades include the construction of a new apron, terminal building, technical block, control tower, and fire station. Additionally, the runway will be extended to accommodate the operation of A321 aircraft.
The new terminal building will have a floor area of 13,500 square metres, providing ample space to accommodate 600 passengers during peak times.
Passengers can expect modern amenities, including two aerobridges, ample automobile parking spaces, and a new approach road. These improvements aim to enhance the overall passenger experience and ensure a smooth and efficient flow of operations.
In addition to the new terminal building, the project also encompasses the construction of auxiliary facilities such as the fire station, apron, and the extension of the runway.
Once completed, the airport's peak-hour passenger handling capacity will increase significantly from 80 to 600. These improvements will greatly enhance the airport's capabilities and contribute to the overall development of the region's transportation infrastructure.
The runway at Tuticorin Airport is undergoing an expansion, increasing its length from 1,350mx30m to 3,115mx45m. The use of modern materials and textures in the building reflects the city's vibrant culture and colours.
The new terminal at Tuticorin Airport will have a unique architectural character, inspired by the Chettinad Cottages. Its intuitive design will add depth to the overall aesthetics.
Moreover, the terminal has been designed with environmental sustainability in mind and has been awarded a four-star GRIHA rating.
As part of the airport expansion project, the current runway is being enlarged, extended, and strengthened to accommodate A-321-type aircraft. Additionally, new facilities including an ATC tower, technical block, fire station, isolation bay, and five aircraft parking bays for A-321-type aircraft will be constructed.
The upgraded Tuticorin Airport will not only meet the needs of the local community for improved passenger services but also contribute to the growth of trade and tourism in Tuticorin and neighbouring areas such as Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari.
The airport upgrade and expansion are expected to be completed by December 2023.
