Tata Electronics And US Chip Firm Synopsys Ink MoU To Strengthen Design And Tech For India's Semiconductor Manufacturing

Tata Electronics has entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with US-based Synopsys, a semiconductor design and engineering firm — to collaborate across multiple technological domains.

This partnership involves leveraging Synopsys’ solutions for Tata’s upcoming semiconductor fabrication facility in Dholera, Gujarat, reports Money Control.

Synopsys, headquartered in California, specialises in providing solutions for silicon-to-systems design.

Under the MoU, following the completion of the fab, Tata Electronics plans to utilise Synopsys’ foundry design platform to enhance the development of custom semiconductor products for its clients.

Additionally, the collaboration will extend to various technological fields such as factory automation, data analytics, computer-aided design, technology transfer, supply of product design kits, and the development of intellectual properties for the chip fab.

In February 2024, Tata Electronics announced its plans to construct country’s first fab in Dholera, Gujarat, as part of the government's initiative to foster semiconductor and display manufacturing within the country.

Additionally, the group announced an investment of Rs 27,000 crore for a greenfield facility in Jagiroad, Assam, dedicated to the assembly and testing of semiconductor chips.

These facilities collectively aim to produce semiconductor chips for a wide range including automotive, mobile devices, artificial intelligence (AI), and other critical sectors, serving customers globally.

According to the company's statement, "As construction advances on these facilities, developing partnerships across the entire semiconductor ecosystem — from process and design technology to equipment suppliers — is crucial."

Earlier this year, Synopsys launched a semiconductor chip design centre at DLF Tech Park in Noida. This facility is the company's second-largest design centre in India and aims to employ 6,000 engineers, comprising 27 per cent of its global design workforce.
