In a major announcement during the Interim Budget 2024, the Union government revealed a remarkable transformation in the aviation sector, showcasing a decade of unprecedented growth and development.
The past 10 years have seen a dynamic surge in the aviation landscape, with the number of airports doubling to a total of 149.
One of the standout achievements highlighted in the budget speech was the extensive rollout of air connectivity to tier-two and tier-three cities under the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme. This initiative has not only democratised air travel but has also catalysed economic development in previously underserved regions.
The government shared that a staggering 517 new routes have been established under the UDAN scheme, successfully ferrying 1.3 crore passengers.
The UDAN scheme launched to enhance regional connectivity, has played a pivotal role in making air travel more accessible to a broader segment of the population. The newly-introduced routes have connected remote and smaller cities, fostering economic growth and cultural exchange.
Moreover, Indian carriers have demonstrated proactive engagement in the industry's growth by placing orders for over 1,000 new aircraft. This move signifies a significant investment in expanding fleet capacities, improving services, and meeting the escalating demands of air travel in the country.
Looking ahead, the budget announcement also underlined the commitment to the continued expansion of existing airports and the development of new ones. The emphasis on expeditious progress in this regard reflects the government's dedication to further enhancing the country's aviation infrastructure.
The development of airports is not only seen as a means to accommodate the surging air traffic but also as a catalyst for economic growth, job creation, and improved connectivity across the nation. The strategic expansion of airports aligns with the government's vision to position India as a global aviation hub.
