A new strain of Coronavirus which is ten times more infectious has been detected in a cluster which emanated out of a Malaysian restaurant owner who had recently returned from India, Bloomberg has reported.

As per the report, the D614G strain which was earlier detected in other parts of the world, was found in three of the 45 Covid-19 positive cases which form the infection cluster of the restaurant owner. The man has already been sentenced to five months in prison after having flouted the 14-day home quarantine after returning from India.

Incidentally, the D614G strain has also been found in another cluster of patients who returned from the Philippines.

As per the Malaysian Director-General of Health Noor Hisham Abdullah this new strain would mean that existing studies on vaccine development may be incomplete against the mutation.

This mutation which has been prevalent in the US and Europe has not shown any evidence of causing more serious symptoms as per the WHO.
