Coming close on the heels of a sex scandal that rocked the town, at least 163 college going youngsters were caught using drugs at a rave party at a private resort near Sethumadai in Pollachi in the early hours of Saturday (4 May), New Indian Express reported.
According to the local police, 112 people were booked by police after they were found in possession of ganja, cocaine, hashish, banned sedative tablets and MDMA at the resort.
The students, most of them who hailed from Kerala and were studying in various colleges in Coimbatore, organised rave party at the resort. Revenue officials also decided to seal the resort after they found out that being run without permission.
The invite for the rave party was managed over social media channels and was pitched as a 24-hour weekend celebration beginning 6 pm on Friday. As per preliminary police investigation, each guest was charged around Rs 1,500 for entry.
“All students were detained at a marriage hall. Fourteen people, including the resort owner, and manager and a 28-year-old Russian man, were arrested under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and remanded.Also, 98 people were booked under sections of IPC and Tamil Nadu Prohibition Act,” a senior police officer was quoted as saying.
The arrested Russian will be sent to Puzhal jail.
As followup to the incident, Coimbatore police carried out simultaneous raids at various resorts in the locality to see if drug abuse was taking place.
