In a shocking incident, a 19-year-old Indian American student of the University of Illinois in Chicago, Ruth George, was sexually assaulted and then murdered by the attacker by strangulation, reports PTI.

The body of the victim was discovered in a garage on campus premises on Saturday (23 November); the vehicle in which she was found is said to be owned by her family.

The gruesome murder has left the University of Illinois in a state of mourning, with the Chancellor Michael D Amiridis releasing a statement on the same.

“All of us are devastated by the loss of Ruth George, a member of our Honours College and a talented kinesiology student with dreams and aspirations to become a health professional and help others. Our thoughts, our hearts, and our condolences are with her family and friends during this trying period, ” he said.

The attacker was identified as one 26-year-old Donald Thurman and has been arrested by police. Already possessing a criminal record, he has confessed that he carried out the crime.
