The Congress’ led Bharat Bandh today (10 September) turned controversial after a prime accused in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots Sajjan Kumar was seen leading a party procession in New Delhi.
The bandh has been in effect across different cities including Bengaluru, Chennai, Kolkata, Guwahati, Mumbai and others. Congress President Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh are also organising a sit-in protest outside a petrol pump in New Delhi.
1984 anti-Sikh riots killed almost 3,000 people, and many Congress leaders have been accused of having a hand in the killings, after the assassination of former PM Indira Gandhi.
Sajjan Kumar, is currently being probed by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in a couple of cases related to the murder of three Sikhs during the riots. Last month, the High Court of Delhi conducted a hearing against him, after taking cognisance of an appeal filed by the CBI and several victims of the riots.
A CD was also submitted earlier in March, which supposedly contains the confession of Sajjan Kumar, which talks about his roles in the riots. Kumar has been asked to reply on the matter.
