2017-18 Direct Tax Collections Top Rs 10 Lakh Crore, Maharastra Leads With Over 38 Per Cent Share

Only three states have topped Rs 1 lakh crore in direct tax collection in 2017-18 - Maharashtra, Delhi and Karnataka as the total direct tax collection in the country topped Rs 10 lakh crore.

Maharastra leads the states with Rs 3,84,277.5 crore collected during 2017-18, contributing to 38.3 per cent of the total direct tax collection. Delhi follows with a collection of Rs 1,36,934.9 crore collected during the period.

Karnataka topped the southern states by contributing a total of Rs 1,01,187.54 crore, with Tamil Nadu (TN) coming next with Rs 63,583.63 crore. TN was followed by Andhra Pradesh (Rs 42,236.97 crore), Kerala (Rs 17,139.32 crore) and Telangana (Rs 7,035.54 crore) according to the data of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT).

The major states of Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar registered a decline in direct tax collections at a time when the country as a whole recorded an 18 per cent increase in direct tax collection in 2017-18 , as reported by Deccan Herald.

The most significant decline was seen in Uttar Pradesh (20 per cent) followed by Bihar and Rajasthan, (3-4 per cent each). These states had registered an increase in tax collections immediately after demonetisation but returned to the old pattern within a year.
