Telecom major Airtel has recorded a speed of over 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps) using the network gear of Finnish firm Nokia during a 5G field trial in Mumbai, reports Economic Times.

The development comes as Airtel is running a live 5G trial in Phoenic Mall in Mumbai's Lower Parel.

"Airtel is conducting the trial in the 3500 MHz band using 5G gear from Nokia as per DoT guidelines. The trials have delivered speeds of over 1 Gbps with ultra-low latency," a Nokia spokesperson was quoted in the report as saying.

It should be noted that 1 Gbps is equal 1,000 Megabits per second.

Several Indian telco majors including Airtel had recently received 5G trial spectrum from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) in the 3500 MHz, 28 GHz and 700 MHz bands.

The spectrum were allotted in certain locations including Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Kolkata and Bengaluru to develop India-relevant use cases on the next generation fast wireless broadband technology.

It should be noted that earlier this year, Airtel became the first telco to test 5G over a live network in Hyderabad using liberalised spectrum in 1800 MHz band.
