As of 4 May, the application had already been downloaded by close to nine crore users, even as the adoption and usage of the application continue to surge. To further bolster the usage of the application in the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic, the government has made it mandatory for public and private sector employees.
It should be noted that Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi has in his address to the nation on 14 April had urged the citizens to download the application. He had informed people how the application alerts users if anyone in their vicinity has contracted the virus.
The application has been developed by a committee set up by PM's Office with involvement from NITI Aayog and the Union Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
